Statement of Faith
I believe in one God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I am convinced that deep inside all of us there is a desire to truly make a difference with our lives. My faith has become my passion; Im passionate about community, about moving beyond myself and partnering with God to impact the world, being a voice of hope both locally and globally. I strive to be authentic with God outwardly focused on faith and compassion in community. I believe that genuine community and spiritual formation happens best within the context of small groups. I am always involved and meet weekly with small groups along with weekend worship environments in multiple locations. I am committed to living by faith, being known by love, and being a voice of hope, both locally and globally. My personal commitment is to enrich the lives of young people through art and assist them in their spiritual growth and discovery through visual communication, and guide them through developing their personal identity in Jesus Christ.
Philosophy of Teaching Christian Higher Education
My philosophy of teaching Christian higher education starts with my confession of faith. As an art professor I am a servant of Christ leading students to contribute to the mission of our Church in our visual culture. I am dedicated to the role of building up young men and women knowledge, and wisdom and consider this a sacred endeavor. In my professional experience I will maintain an environment that will honor God and promote Christian goals of the Church, and support the College. I will ask students to seek God's direction in their vocational calling. I will foster a pervasive Christian environment that allows intellectual open dialogue, and creative individualism. The basis of my philosophy is to give direction through modeling the truth with an open mind and heart. My goal is to encourage students in a mature faith that integrates the development of their knowledge in visual art with Christian values that defies contemporary trends and glorifies God.
Philosophy of Art Education
My philosophy of art education utilizes project based, visual thinking, and inquiry based education. Students will develop positive attitudes and self confidence through rigorous collaboration with partners, building their craftsmanship and ethics of excellence. Real world application is a cornerstone to every project, and professionals are frequent classroom visitors, and consultants for many projects. Critical thinking, and problem solving encourage students to connect visual knowledge across curriculum. Students will often be working across other fields of study and responding with innovation to design problems with flexibility and imagination. Through this art experience students will develop an understanding of our world, an acceptance of different cultures, and a close examination of art history. My principals of art education are to develop students who are: knowledgeable inquirers, good communicators, open minded, risk-takers, and reflective.
Innovative Art Teaching Strategies
Discipline based art education has been used as a model for education for many years. The teacher stands and lectures about line, and asks the students to make a project based on thei teacher model presented in class. This is not innovative art education! I have combined the practices of Project Based Learning, International Baccalaureate Inquiry education with Visual Thinking Strategies, and developed a student inquiry based program. At the heart of this instruction are students developing their communication, collaboration, and critical visual thinking skills. Students develop their ability to see, ask their own questions, and develop a system for solving their own art/ design problems. Students collaborate in small groups, critique each other's works, connect their projects with other fields of study, communicate with professionals, and create works of excellence for public and community exhibitions. In my approach, media and technology are used in class as important tools. Online web based communications are available for students to receive feedback, and share reflections on student works through White Board, Adobe Connect, or Moodle.
I have a depth of technical skills in art and education that is hard to match with a Graphic Communications Major from Point Loma Nazarene University, Masters in Cross-cultural Teaching from National University, and a Masters in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University. I have worked as an Art Director in graphic design, where I hired and managed a graphic design team that produced sports posters for schools nationally. As an assistant Curator of Art Education at The Museum of Art History in Santa Cruz, CA, I produced graphics, and art workshops for the public. At Westmont High School in Campbell, CA and High Tech Middle Media Arts, San Diego I taught workshops to teachers, and created the first graphic design class and curriculum to meet UC and State standards. Additionally, I have taught Art 1 through AP for 9 years.
My work with students always encourages artwork that is meaningful, culturally relevant and public. Working with young artists that believe art can literally change the world and transform people has inspired me to pursue work with nonprofits and communities.
I have technical advanced experience in painting, photography, printmaking, silkscreen, new media, and a successful record in art exhibits. In addition to selling in several galleries, I have worked professionally with artists including Jason Bowen, Bryan Mark Taylor, and Dorothy Cochrane.
My greatest desire is to share my passion for nature through teaching art.
